“Let it never be said that political gamesmanship in Juneau is restricted to the legislative session. Waves of prefiled bills in advance of the session have already highlighted areas of contention for lawmakers this year. Some of the bills are on weighty topics; others focus on niche issues. But among the several bills filed so far, none are as aggressively short-sighted and self-defeating as a pair, introduced by Wasilla Republican legislators Rep. David Eastman and Sen. Mike Dunleavy, aimed at “restoring” the 2016 Alaska Permanent Fund dividend by paying out checks from the state treasury directly to residents.”
